Environmental Field Technician (On-Call/As-Needed)

The Environmental Field Technician is the backbone of L.S. Sims & Associates. Our Field Technicians collect samples and observe facility operations to provide important data necessary to assure accurate tracking and reporting of the environmental remediation process. They have the ability to perform all pertinent sampling procedures and practices outlined in the Florida Department of Environmental Protections’ (FDEP) Standard Operating Procedures (SOP). They maintain records of field and monitoring data including accurate field logs, notes, photos, and operation and maintenance logs.


NOTE: This is not a full-time or part-time position. This position is on an as-needed or on-call basis when LSSA is understaffed and needs additional field personnel. Accepted applicant will be notified at least 5-business days in advance of work and may accept/decline individual jobs at will. Accepted applicant will be paid hourly as a subcontractor.

Duties Performed

  • Conducts facility environmental testing and sampling of surface water, groundwater, and soil. 
  • Completes and consults the Health and Safety Plan (HASP) for each site daily. Identifies and communicates problems noted in the field to appropriate personnel.
  • Performs inspections of remediation systems and components to ensure superb maintenance and performance.
  • Performs field projects to completion when requested to ensure on-going progress in the remediation of sites.
  • Maintains records of field and monitoring data including accurate field logs, notes, photos, and operation and maintenance logs. Turns in hard copies of records to Project Manager and uploads electronic copies to the server daily.
  • Performs miscellaneous job duties as assigned including but not limited to:
    • fleet vehicle maintenance and cleaning
    • field supply shed and storage house maintenance and cleaning
    • site landscaping and vegetation control
    • site debris clearing


Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED certificate required. Bachelors degree in a related field (Geology, Env. Sci., Ecology, or similar) preferred.
  • 3 years of prior related work experience. Applicability of previous work experience determined on interview.
  • Ability to operate and maintain environmental field and laboratory equipment required
  • Prior environmental sampling and/or operations and maintenance experience preferred
  • Already obtained or has the ability to obtain the following certifications and training:
    • 40-Hour Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) certification
    • Groundwater sampling in accordance with FDEP SOP


Skills and Physical Requirements


  • Basic computer skills. Familiar with Microsoft Office and Excel required
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Must have initiative 
  • Work independently and follow direction 
  • Strong organization skills 
  • Ability to operate all-terrain vehicles, tow trailers, etc.
  • Ability to work outside during all Florida seasons for extended periods of time
  • Physically able to stand, bend, and lift up to 50lbs without assistance
  • Must have a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record
  • Must be able to pass a drug test
