Environmental regulations and permitting programs introduced during the 1970s and 1980s still provide a floor for environmental responsibility. During the 1980s, the Superfund program was growing and environmental liability provided new incentives for environmental stewardship. While the regulations, programs, and technologies continued to evolve throughout the 1990s, the environmental industry began to focus on a more preventive and proactive approach to environmental management. Waste minimization and pollution prevention provided a way to reduce costs and reduce the compliance workload at the same time. Occupational safety & health and environmental management became more integrated. Management systems provided organizations with frameworks for integrating EHS into their business and mission.

Today, organizations are reviewing their strategies and operations for a more sustainable balance between the environmental, social and economic dimensions of their activities, products and services. This process often includes a broader set of internal and external stakeholders, and can result in the development of competitive advantages.
